On December 5, 1996, Helen Hofer, her parents, and her six siblings leave Greenwald Hutterite Colony and move to the town of Selkirk, Manitoba, a thirty-minute drive away. On that day, they feel like immigrants in their own country. Guided by wisdom and stability of their parents, Helen and her siblings transition from living a sheltered communal life to an unfamiliar, pathbreaking one. As they grow up, they learn to trust the new world around them, but when tragedy strikes, they must rely on their family bond to make sense of themselves again. This memoir continues the story within Removing the Hutterite Kerchief, written by Helens mother, Rebecca Hofer.
