In 1764 Empress Catherine the Great of Russia sent an invitation to the Mennonites living in the region of Danzig. She promised them free land to farm in the southern regions of her empire, and freedom to practice their own faith. Over the next fifty years several thousand Mennonites moved to Russia. Settling into their colonies in what is now Ukraine, they developed a unique culture, blending what they had brought with them from Holland and Germany with what they learned to appreciate in Russia and Ukraine. Selma Willms Turner has artfully woven together stories, recipes and colour photographs in this book, to celebrate the German-Russian Mennonite culture, and to recall its stories, its folkways and most particularly its food (with more than 100 recipes, many of them “heritage” recipes). A DVD in the back cover of the book offers several easy-to-follow baking lessons, including Zwieback and bread.
